Roger Smith, Director of JUSTICE
Roger Smith is a solicitor and has been the Director of Justice since November 2001. He has served as the Director of Education and Training at the Law Society; Director of the Legal Action Group; Solicitor to the Child Poverty Action Group and Director of West Hampstead Community Law Centre. He is an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Kent, Canterbury and a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at London South Bank University.
Councillor Stephen Adshead, Mayor of Trafford
Councillor Stephen Adshead is the Mayor of Trafford and represents the Stretford Ward of Trafford MBC. Stephen is a Constituency Labour Party Treasurer; a Governor of St. Ann's School Stretford; a Member of the Stretford Town Centre Partnership and a member of a number of local parks’ groups and residents’ associations.
Professor David Ormandy, Head of the Safe and Healthy Housing Unit, University of Warwick
Professor David Ormandy specialises in the formulation of standards and the relationship between the environment (particularly the housing environment) and health. He was formerly the founder and director of the Public Health Advisory Service (a project funded by Shelter). David served as UK Government Adviser on Housing Standards: Developed the Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS); an Approved Code of Practice for Management Standards in Multi-Occupied Buildings and the Good Practice Guide for Housing Disrepair Legal Obligations. He currently serves as a Member of the World Health Organisation European Task Force on Health and Housing.
Councillor Mrs. Judith Lloyd, Chair, Trafford Law Centre
Councillor Mrs. Judith Lloyd is the Mayoress of Trafford. Judith represents the Longford Ward and is the Deputy Shadow Leader, Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council. She is the Chair of Health Scrutiny and Shadow Spokesperson for Education. Judith is also the Treasurer and a Trustee of Trafford Women's Aid; a Governor of Stretford High School and a Member of the Board of Genie Networks.
Housing
Jan Luba QC
Jan Luba QC was called to the Bar in 1980 and was made Queen's Counsel in 2000. He is one of the leading authorities on housing law and practice. Jan has been involved in just about every leading case in the housing field, developing and enforcing the rights of the homeless and those living in substandard accommodation. He is co-author of a number of housing law titles including Repairs: Tenants' Rights (LAG) and Housing Allocations and Homelessness (Jordans). He sits as a Recorder in the civil and criminal courts and as an Employment Judge and was named Legal Aid Barrister of the Year for 2007 by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group.
Dr. Stephen Battersby
Stephen Battersby is the President of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and Secretary to the CIEH Commission on Housing Renewal and Public Health. He is a Visiting Senior Fellow in the Robens Centre for Public and Environmental Health in the University of Surrey.
Employment
Professor Alan Neal
Professor Alan Neal was called to the Bar in 1975. Alan is Professor of Law and Director of the Employment Law Research Unit at the University of Warwick. He is a practising barrister with Cloisters (1 Pump Court, Temple). He has been an Employment Judge (London Central) since 1995 and is the Convenor of the European Association of Labour Court Judges.
Dr. Stephen Hardy
Stephen Hardy is a practising barrister at 9 St John Street Chambers, Manchester and was formerly a senior lecturer in law in the University of Manchester. He has served as a special advisor to the UK Government for employment matters and since 2006 has been the General Editor of Sweet and Maxwell’s Encyclopaedia of Employment Law.
Mental Health
Mark Mullins
Mark Mullins was called to the Bar in 1988 and is a practising barrister at Outer Temple Chambers, London. Mark’s practice involves mental health law and employment law. He has served as a legal member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal since 1999 and serves as a member of the Disability Rights Commission Panel.
Aswini Weereratne
Aswini Weereratne was called to the Bar in 1986 and is a practising barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, London. Aswini Weereratne specialises in mental health, medical and public law, including appearing before Mental Health Review Tribunals, Discretionary Lifer Panels, public inquiries and coroners. Since 1996 Aswini has been engaged as Chair in six independent homicide inquiries commissioned by various health authorities. She has been counsel in a number of other inquiries relating to mental health care and treatment (including Ashworth Special Hospital Inquiry, 1998). Since 2001 she has been a part-time legal Chair of the Mental Health Review Tribunal (Southern Region).
Disability Rights
Karon Monaghan QC
Karon Monaghan was called to the Bar in 1989 and was made Queen’s Counsel in 2008. Karon is a practising barrister at Matrix Chambers, London. Karon has a strong practice encompassing discrimination and equality, human rights and EU law. She is a Member of The Bar Equality and Diversity Committee, the Equal Treatment Advisory Committee of the JSB (2003 – 2011) and the Fawcett Commission on Women in the Criminal Justice System. She is a founder member and ex- Chair of the Discrimination Law Association.
Mary Stacey
Mary Stacey is a solicitor. Mary is the Chair of the Industrial Law Society, an Employment Judge, a Deputy Chairman of the Central Arbitration Committee and the Independent Chair of the Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education staff. Mary Stacey was formerly the Head of Equality at Thompsons Solicitors before becoming an Employment Judge.
Immigration
Ian MacDonald QC
Ian Macdonald QC was called to the Bar in 1963 and was made Queen's Counsel in 1988. He is Head of Chambers at Garden Court North Chambers, Manchester. He has been a leading figure in race relations and immigration law since the 1960s. His first book on immigration and race relations law Macdonald's Immigration Law and Practice (now co-edited with Frances Webber) is in its 5th edition and is the standard textbook used by most immigration practitioners, immigration officials, adjudicators and judges. In 1987 he was appointed Chair of an Inquiry into Racial Violence in Manchester Schools. In 1998 he was leading counsel for Duwayne Brooks in the Lawrence Inquiry. Also in that year he was appointed by the Attorney General as special advocate to the Immigration Appeals Commission dealing with national security cases, but resigned in December 2004, out of principle, over the indefinite detention without trial of suspected international terrorists.
Alex Durance
Alex Durance was called to the Bar in 1997 and is a practising barrister at Garden Court North Chambers, Manchester. Alex Durance deals with asylum cases and third country removals as part of his overall immigration practice. His practice covers the overlapping social housing, welfare and immigration areas.

Cancellations
Prior to booking deadline 10% of the fee is payable. After booking deadline 50% of the fee is payable. Non-arrival at the event 100% of the fee is payable. Another person may be substituted from the same organisation as long as the details of the substitute are received in writing.
